The Beatles guru Maharishi dies aged 91
Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the man who taught the Beatles transcendental meditation, has died. He was 91.
The Indian mystic became famous in 1968 when the Beatles travelled to the foothills of the Himalayas to learn his techniques and he was also filmed with Mike Love of the Beach Boys, the singer Donovan and actress Mia Farrow.
Love said: "His passing is profoundly sad. But I for one, am among the millions who are grateful for what he shared with us. We will miss you, but your great light will shine on."
Maharishi Mahesh Yogi moved to the village of Vlodrop in Holland in 1990 and died there last night.
The Maharishi built a business empire worth billions, including property dealing and a company selling ayurvedic medicine and cosmetics.
He set up universities and schools all over the world and his Natural Law Party has campaigned in elections in dozens of countries around the world.

Studios examine preservation policies
Universal fire prompts more industrywide attention
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences put the topic front and center with its recent report on the challenges of digital archiving.
And, as Universal execs assess the fire damage -- believed to have affected 40,000-50,000 episodic TV and feature assets, primarily video but including film -- leaders in preservation are gathering today and Saturday for the Reel Thing XX Technical Symposium on technical aspects of restoration and preservation. The Hollywood event is presented by the Association of Moving Image Archivists.
Universal believes all of its affected assets are replaceable as duplicates were kept elsewhere. As they examine the situation, execs will make important decisions about what assets will be replaced. These decisions will be made based on factors including the title, age of title, existing backup and the condition and quality of backups.
Universal's situation certainly will be a topic of discussion at the Reel Thing, said conference co-coordinator Grover Crisp, recently named senior vp asset management, film restoration and digital mastering at Sony Pictures Entertainment.
A key element to the preservation efforts at Hollywood studios is geographic separation. As an example, Crisp said Sony maintains at least three versions of each asset (i.e. negative and two duplicate copies), which are stored in three separate parts of the country. Twentieth Century Fox has a similar policy.
Studios also use various protective methods, such as security, dry piping and temperature and humidity control.
Crisp warned that there is more to data preservation than it might first appear.
"Just because it is data -- not a physical thing that you hold in your hand -- do you suddenly throw out all your years of conservation?" he asked. "You still want to maintain and hold onto the original, make copies, make sure the copies maintain the integrity of the original data, and store them geographically separate."
Disney recently started an initiative to scan in 4K resolution everything in its nitrate library, representing an estimated 16 million frames of film. Digital copies, as well as new film negatives, will be created as backup.
The nitrate library includes most of Disney's titles from the '30s, '40s and '50s, primarily animation as well as some live action titles. The scanning process began last month and is expected to be completed within a year. Creating film elements will take an estimated three to four years.

Mother alleging Spears was drugged
Britney Spears' mother has alleged that the 26-year-old singer was "drugged" by her self-styled manager, Sam Lufti, in order to take control of her life, home and money.
Reuters reports that Lynne Spears' allegations were contained in a sworn declaration submitted to the court in order to obtain a temporary restraining order against Lufti.
The restraining order against Lufti forbids him from contacting Spears in any way.
In the declaration, Lynne Spears alleged: "Mr Lutfi drugged Britney. He has cut Britney's home phone line and removed her cell-phone chargers. He yells at her. He claims to control everything - Britney's business manager, her attorneys and security guards at the gate."
Lynne Spears describes arriving at her daughter's home on 28 January and finding her in a confused state.
She said: "Britney... became very agitated and could not stop moving. She cleaned the house. She changed her clothes many times. She also changed her dogs' clothes many times. Britney spoke to me in a tone and with the level of understanding of a very young girl."
The singer's mother claims that Lufti told her and a friend that he gave the 26-year-old tablets ground up in her food to keep her quiet and told the troubled entertainer that she had to take "10 pills a day" if she wanted to see her two young sons.
Britney Spears' father Jamie and attorney Andrew Wallete have been granted temporary control of the star's assets, pending further legal proceedings.
A judge has ruled that Spears must be examined by a court-appointed psychiatrist to determine if she understands the legal proceedings.

Amy Winehouse Confirms Bond Theme Reports
Amy Winehouse has confirmed she has been working on the title track from forthcoming Bond movie Quantum Of Solace - following weeks of speculation about the track.
The troubled star was rumoured to have been dropped as the film's official musical muse after DJ Mark Ronson told reporters he had scrapped his 007 collaboration with the singer because she was not "ready" to work on music after a recent return to her erratic ways.
But Winehouse has now confirmed that she has in fact completed the song and is just waiting to get the green light from movie bosses over whether the song will be used in the film, which is due in cinemas later this year.
She says, "I've written the song. If they like it, they like it. If they
don't, they don't."
And Ronson adds, "If I talk about it (James Bond star) Daniel Craig will whack me in the eyes. Amy wrote the song on an acoustic guitar. It was my job to help with the arrangement and realise the sound we were going for. So that was my role."
